Kenya’s government, led by Principal Secretary Prof. Edward Kisiang’ani, is set to release Sh2.8 billion from the Universal Service Fund (USF) to enhance digital connectivity across underserved areas. This initiative aims to establish 25,000 WiFi hotspots and 1,450 digital hubs nationwide, significantly boosting access to technology and internet services.
The allocation of funds by the Treasury underscores the government’s commitment to bridging the digital divide and fostering socio-economic development through technology. Prof. Kisiang’ani highlighted the plan to allocate three percent of the National Government-Constituency Development Fund (NG-CDF) towards infrastructural upgrades for these digital hubs. These hubs, categorized into centres of excellence, standard, and ordinary, are designed to provide communities with superfast broadband and access to a range of services, including digital literacy training and public access to government services.
Strengthening Infrastructure and Skills
With the rollout of 10,000 kilometres of fiber optic cables, Kenya aims to create a digital superhighway that will not only enhance connectivity but also support the development of digital skills and create job opportunities. The initiative aligns with Kenya’s ten-year digital master plan, focusing on digital infrastructure, services and data management, digital skills, and innovation for entrepreneurship. Prof. Kisiang’ani also announced the approval of a new structure for the State Department of Broadcasting and Telecommunications, indicating a strategic move towards upgrading and expanding Kenya’s digital landscape.
Dagoretti South MP John Kiarie Waweru emphasized the importance of the digital connectivity initiative, noting its expected contribution to the National Gross Domestic Product (GDP) by 2025. With over 15,845 services digitized and 1.2 million Digital Literacy (DL) devices distributed across 22,000 schools, the government’s efforts are clearly aimed at enhancing digital literacy and sealing revenue leakages for increased collections. The establishment of WiFi hotspots and digital hubs is projected to drive the digitization agenda forward, making Kenya a significant player in Africa’s digital evolution.
