Arizona State University (ASU) is spearheading a transformative clean energy initiative, EPIXC, with a robust $70 million backing from the Department of Energy. This groundbreaking project, revealed at the Rob and Melani Walton Center for Planetary Health, positions ASU at the forefront of the clean energy revolution, aiming to dramatically reduce the carbon footprint of industrial heating processes.

Revolutionizing Industrial Heating

EPIXC, or Electrified Processes for Industry Without Carbon, represents a significant leap towards mitigating climate change by targeting the industrial sector’s greenhouse gas emissions. With industrial heating accounting for a substantial one-third of the U.S. carbon footprint, the initiative’s goal to cut emissions by 85% by 2035 is both ambitious and critical. Spearheaded by ASU and involving a consortium of universities, national laboratories, and over 100 companies, EPIXC is a testament to the power of collaboration in tackling global challenges.

Building an Equitable Clean Energy Future

Under the leadership of Sridhar Seetharaman, CEO of EPIXC and a distinguished professor at ASU, the initiative not only focuses on technological innovations but also emphasizes equitable energy transitions. Past transitions have often marginalized communities, a trend EPIXC aims to reverse by ensuring benefits and solutions are accessible to all, including underserved populations. The involvement of institutions like Navajo Technical University underscores this commitment to inclusivity and social equity in the clean energy landscape.

A critical aspect of EPIXC’s strategy involves workforce development, with plans to train up to 3,000 individuals over the next five years. This initiative recognizes the indispensable role of skilled labor in achieving a sustainable clean energy future, highlighting the need for a diverse range of professionals, from electricians to social scientists.
