West Greenville’s beloved K&S Restaurant closed its doors for the last time on February 29, leaving a legacy of comfort food and community spirit behind. Allan Clark, an 82-year-old regular, along with countless others, was left searching for a new spot that could replicate the routine and family atmosphere K&S offered for over five decades. Owner Anastasia Mentzelopoulou, overwhelmed by emotion, bid farewell to the diner that had been a significant part of her life since her father, Leo, established it.

End of an Era

The diner’s closure was a tough decision for Mentzelopoulou, who struggled with staffing issues and the operational challenges following her father’s death in August. COVID-19’s lasting impact made recovery impossible, and the diner could not sustain its operation, especially after discontinuing its dinner service. The diner, a strip mall staple on White Horse Road, had also faced health inspection challenges, but these were quickly addressed. Despite efforts to keep the diner afloat, the loss of her father and the pandemic’s toll forced Mentzelopoulou to close the restaurant and plan a retirement that includes travel back to Greece.

Memories and Meals

Regulars like Leisha Olson, a third-generation diner, shared fond memories of meals at K&S, highlighting popular dishes like turkey and dressing, salmon patties, and the classic bacon and eggs. The restaurant wasn’t just about food; it was about the connections and the sense of belonging it fostered within the community. As the news of the closing spread, regulars came in to share one last meal, take photos, and say their goodbyes, turning the diner’s final days into a celebration of its legacy.

Looking Ahead

As Mentzelopoulou prepares for her next chapter, she reflects on the mixed feelings of leaving the restaurant business and the community that became an extended family. A farewell party for the employees and loyal customers is in the works, offering one last chance to gather and share memories. The closure of K&S Restaurant marks the end of an era for West Greenville, leaving a void that will be hard to fill for those who found comfort in its consistency and warmth.
