Three 15-year-old boys have been arrested after a woman was allegedly raped near a historical ruin.
Police say the victim reported the incident in the Tynemouth Priory and Castle area just before 4pm last Sunday.
It was not immediately clear whether the alleged attack took place among the medieval ruins or nearby.
The site, which is open to visitors, overlooks the North Sea coast and the estuary of the river Tyne.
The teenagers were all arrested on suspicion of rape, Northumbria Police said.
They have since been released on bail pending further enquiries.
Anyone with information about the incident has been urged to contact police.
A spokesperson for the force said: ‘An investigation was immediately launched by police, and the female victim continues to be supported by specialist officers.’
