A mother has been arrested after a viral video showed her allegedly driving with her 12-year-old son holding down a baby bassinet in the open trunk of her car.
Diana Denise Shaffer, 36, was identified as the registered owner of a grey vehicle that appeared in the video showing a large object in the trunk along with the child, stated the Gwinnett County Police Department.
‘The item in the trunk was a baby bassinet recently purchased through an online marketplace advertisement, and the child (boy, age 12) was sitting in the trunk to help hold the item in place,’ wrote the police department on a Facebook post on Wednesday.
A woman on Sunday reported the video on social media to cops in the West Precinct of the county in Georgia. The car had an out-of-state license plate.
‘The video referenced “Gwinnett County,” but it was unclear exactly where it was filmed or when the incident occurred,’ stated police.
On Monday, a detective used a license plate reader camera to determine that a vehicle matching that description was spotted near Pleasant Hill and Shackleford roads in unincorporated Duluth the prior day.
The detective met with the owner of the vehicle, Shaffer, on Tuesday at her home in Duluth. Shaffer was arrested and charged with a seat belt violation and reckless conduct. She was booked into Gwinnett County Jail that evening.
Shaffer’s son was been placed in the custody of a family member until Shaffer bonded out of jail on Wednesday.
Police did not mention any injuries the boy may have sustained.
Shaffer was arrested more than four years after an Illinois mother was seen driving with her two children on an inflatable pool on the roof of her Audi SUV near her home in Dixon. Jennifer Yeager allegedly drove to her friend’s home to use a pump to inflate the pool and then told her daughters to sit on the pool to keep it secured to the roof of her vehicle. Yeager arrested and charged for failing to secure a passenger under the age 8, and another under 16.
