Dozens of people have been wounded in a pile up with at least 15 vehicles in Sussex.
Footage from the scene on the M23 shows the aftermath of the harrowing crash.
It is understood at least 40 people were injured during the rush hour incident on Friday afternoon.
Reports of the mass collision come as torrential rain drenched roads in the area.
Traffic is still tailing back in both directions as police and emergency services work to clear the road.
A Sussex Police spokesperson said the crash between junctions 10 and 11 shut the motorway completely.
They said: ‘The M23 is closed both ways between junctions 10 and 11 after a crash involving around 15 vehicles.
‘Emergency services were called at 5.40pm and the ambulance service is treating multiple casualties. Please avoid the area and expect disruption.’
At least one more major accident has been reported in Sussex as rain continued to lash the south coast.
Fire engines were seen attending another smash eastbound on the A27.
